Dog breeding is a tough business since most people underestimate it when they first start out, get burned and quit. It isn’t that hard if you’re prepared for it. I’m often asked questions about my success with it, so I thought I’d share some of the answers.

How do I find a stud dog?

This is actually pretty easy, you just need to have standards. What you want to do is go to an American Kennel Club in your state and you can get the name of some great ones. Make sure you take the time to get information on the health of the stud dog. You do not want to have your dog breeding with a dog that has STDs or other diseases.

I want to do this as a business, do I need any special licenses?

This really depends on your state. Some states require you to register and get a kennel permit, some don’t. I would personally get a permit regardless if I was required to or not. The permit can save you a lot of legal trouble, if a neighbor decided to complain about what you’re doing.

Where do I get the dogs to breed?

The best place to have them breed is right at the stud dogs place. This is just the way it works for dogs. They always do it at the stud dogs place. Try to keep your dog as calm as possible, so she doesn’t end up breaking anything.
